The Royal Opera House is the third theatre to be built on the Covent Garden site. The building as it stands today was opened on 15th May 1858 and became The Royal Opera House in 1892. The frieze behind the portico by Flaxman 1809 was saved from the previous building, and a west extension to the Opera House was competed in 1982.
